Do Lefties Need Special Scissors ?

According to studies, approximately 10% of the population is left-handed. That may not seem like much in comparison to the rest of humanity being right-handed (especially when you belong to the majority being right-handed), but 10% of 7.8 billion is 780,000,000, which is a pretty impressive number, right? Certainly not a number of people that any global market could ignore, especially when broken down like that!

Nonetheless, left-handed people frequently face difficulties; many are forced or choose to learn how to use their right hand to make life easier. Why, why, why do the lefties subject themselves to the torcher and pain?

But, fortunately for all left-handed hairdressers and stylists around the world, the world of shears and scissors is fairly inclusive, and you won't have too much trouble finding a high-quality left-handed tool - and no, you don't have to pay more just because you're not as comfortable with your right hand as you are with your left.

In the case of scissors, the devil is not, at least not entirely, in the details. The difference is visible with the naked eye; simply look at a pair of left-handed scissors, knowing that something is off but not being able to identify the problem right away. It all depends on how perceptive you are.

To put it simply, when compared to right-handed scissors, left-handed scissors have their blades reversed - the latter have a left blade pointing up and a right blade pointing down, whereas the former have the opposite. This is because the right (correct, not non-left) blade must always be on top in order to make a sharp, clean cut. It also allows you to get a clear view of what you're cutting - in this case, your customer's hair. You must admit that it may be difficult to do your job well if you can't see what you're doing.

Using right-handed scissors with your left hand will simply feel awkward - a strange grip may not support or even hurt your thumb. It will also cause your wrist to be in an unnatural position, causing a lot of potentially harmful tension. Furthermore, reversed handles will unnaturally push your fingers, creating unnecessary pressure that can lead to painful calluses. Ouch!

Furthermore, some hairdressing shears may have blades designed so that you cannot make a smooth cut while holding them with the incorrect hand. Not to mention that your hand will be in an awkward position and you won't be able to see the cutting line.

Some people prefer to buy right-handed scissors to use with their non-dominant hand. While you can practise and become quite comfortable with such cutting, it is unlikely that you will be able to do so as accurately and firmly as with your dominant hand. You may also have difficulty applying the proper amount of strength to a single cut, which can be frustrating at times, such as when thinning. The possibilities are too terrifying to contemplate.

Your left-handedness Left-handed scissors are required. There will be adult lefties out there who will tell me that they can cut right. That's fantastic. The thing is, we can adapt to using the incorrect scissors. My son is a lefty, and there always seem to be lefty scissors around when I need to cut something quickly. To cut well with left-handed scissors, I've learned to adapt and angle the scissors just right. That, however, is not the point. Just because something is possible does not imply that it is best practise. The point is that there is no better activity for developing prewriting muscles than cutting.

The upper cutting blade on right-handed scissors is on the right-hand side due to the structure of the scissors. This means that if you use these scissors as a lefty, the blade will obstruct the cutting line. This will make the finished product look hacked at, and you will be unable to cut well on the line. If this isn't clear, find a pair of left-handed scissors and hold them in your right hand. Try cutting with them now. The upper blade is visible on the left side, obstructing the cutting line. You will cut more accurately if you use right-handed scissors.

Professional hairdressing scissors held in the correct hand, whether left or right, will normally have the brand logo facing you when held correctly in the hand and raised to eye level. The tension screw will also be facing you, and when you open the blade, you will notice the curved edge in the middle and the blade's base at the bottom. If you switch your shears into the wrong hands, everything will obviously be flipped for what we just explained. First, the tension screw will be gone or flat because it is on the screw's back.

The advantages of using a reversible shear are that your cutting techniques can significantly improve on a less dominant side of the haircut. For example, have you ever noticed that when you slide, cut, or blend out on one side of the face frame, the other side is always easier? This is due to the fact that when you flip your hand to the less dominant side of the hair cut, your technique changes and becomes a little awkward. You will never have that problem with reversible shears because instead of flipping over your hand, you simply transfer your haircutting scissors to the other hand to perform the same technique.
